SOURCE: gas over flow on dual tank system

If they fill separately and have a switch to select tanks, then simply just use whichever tank you want to. If they are connected, you will have to drain both tanks, remove the connecting pipe and plug each tank. Make sure you are using the one that the pickup is in if there is only one.

SOURCE: Dual tanks on 1990 Ford F150

It should not cause no problems but instead of removing the tank leave it in the truck take out all the fuel in the tank and jus discontinue use of it. This will save you alot of time and trouble and i also suggest that if anyone besides you drives this vehicle then i would put a locking gas cap on it so it cant be accessed at anytime except by you.

tank switch on dash could be bad, also selector valve could be bad. are the fuel gauges accurate front or rear. like you say the rear reads full, is it?? I would try the switch on the dash first.

There is one orifice tube for the font air. It is located in the a/c line coming from the condenser to the evap. core. the rear a/c has and expansion valve attached to the rear evap. core. Hope this helps.

1988 Ford Ranger XLT 4X4. Newly purchased dual fuel tank has an internal fuel pump, an inline pump, a fuel tank selector unit, and what looks like a second fuel tank selector unit (which is leaking).

The black reservoir/fuel tank selector unit you are referring to is the fuel tank switching valve, which is designed to switch between the two fuel tanks in your 1988 Ford Ranger XLT 4X4. This valve is responsible for directing fuel from the selected tank to the fuel pump and engine.
The second fuel tank selector unit you mentioned (part number 5sv2k) is likely a replacement part for the original fuel tank selector unit. It is not intended to replace the fuel tank switching valve.
The dual fuel tank system in your Ford Ranger requires both the fuel tank switching valve and the fuel tank selector unit to function properly. The fuel tank selector unit allows the driver to switch between the two fuel tanks, while the fuel tank switching valve directs fuel from the selected tank to the fuel pump and engine.
If the black fuel tank switching valve is leaking or malfunctioning, it should be replaced to ensure proper operation of your dual fuel tank system.

Where is the fuel transfer valve on a dual tank 1993 Ford F150 located?

From what I can find out Ford did not use a fuel transfer valve in 1992. They ran both pumps to a common fuel line and used one way check valves to keep one pump from filling the other tank while keeping the entire fuel system pressurized. Your tank selector switch is actually switching pumps off and on, not a transfer valve. The problem Ford had was the one way valves failing causing one of the tanks to overflow. They have an external one way valve kit to solve this problem, but the valves are about $85.00 each.

FAQs

How does a dual fuel tank system work? ›

Some race teams will install a fuel pump pickup and a dedicated fuel pump on each side of a fuel tank or fuel cell. This way, if the tank/fuel cell is running low on fuel and encounters high corner lateral g-loads and fuel sloshing/shifting takes place, there will be a constant supply of fuel to the engine.

Do dual fuel tanks have two fuel pumps? ›

The two main dual fuel pump designs are 1) series and 2) parallel. A series design places two fuel pumps inline in a common fuel line. A parallel system has pumps working in two separate fuel lines that commonly merge farther up the fuel system at a 'Y' connection.

What is the two pipes in fuel tank? ›

One is the high pressure line, which sends fuel to the injectors. The other is the return line, which dumps fuel that the injectors don't use back into the tank.

Why do Ford trucks have 2 gas tanks? ›

Ford placed its tanks (especially during the '80s) in the front and rear of the pickup and utilized a fuel tank selector valve. Trucks were previously made with more than one fuel tank for several reasons, including space-saving design for engineers, extra fuel for drivers, and enhanced weight distribution.

What is the main disadvantage of dual fuel system? ›

DUAL FUEL RANGE DISADVANTAGES

Generally speaking, the main downsides of a dual fuel range are their cost and installation. These types of stoves tend to be more expensive than their all-gas or all-electric counterparts, so it's important to consider this and compare ranges before making a purchase.

What are the disadvantages of dual fuel engines? ›

The LPG dual-fuel engines come with better thermal efficiency and high out power but suffer the disadvantage of low efficiency during part-load operation as a result of lower consumption of charges.

Which pipe leads the excess fuel of injector back to the fuel tank? ›

Overflow pipe: A pipe provided on fuel filter bowl and injectors to supply excess fuel back to fuel tank is called overflow pipe.

How are fuel lines connected? ›

Fittings. Traditionally fuel lines had flared or compression fittings on the rigid pipe sections, and hose clamps where rubber hoses attached to metal components. In modern cars with plastic fuel lines, quick release fittings are becoming more common – this allows the fuel system components to simply clip together.

Why does a fuel tank need a return line? ›

The fuel return line routes excess fuel from the engine back to the tank.

What trucks have dual gas tanks? ›

One example of a vehicle with dual fuel tanks is the Ford F-150 pickup truck. Some models of the Ford F-150 offer an optional dual-tank setup, allowing for increased fuel capacity and flexibility for drivers who regularly travel long distances or haul heavy loads.

Why are fuel tanks at the back of the car? ›

Logistics and safety. Generally the fuel tank is at the opposite end of the car because there is not room to put them both at the same end. Also, most modern cars have the fuel tank between the rear wheels, which is the safest place to put it, as it is well protected there.

How does a dual tank septic system work? ›

Unlike a regular septic system, the two tanks on the dual septic system are used to separately store blackwater and greywater. Blackwater entails things such as urine, fecal matter, and flush water. Alternatively, greywater is the much less pathogenic liquid coming from showers, sinks, and washing machines.

How do dual oil tanks work? ›

When twin tanks are used, there are two ways that they are set up. The most common setup involves a connector pipe on top of the two tanks. The oil comes in through the fill pipe into the first tank. Once the first tank is filled to the top, the oil is then forced up and out of the first tank, into the second tank.

How do auxiliary fuel tanks work? ›

When the stock tank gets near ¼ of a tank it will turn on a transfer pump and transfer fuel from the auxiliary tank to the stock tank. The AFC will shut off the transfer pump when the stock tank is near full or the auxiliary tank is empty.

How do double wall fuel tanks work? ›

Double-walled tanks are a tank within a tank and designed to prevent releases into the environment by containing fuel leaking out from the inner tank in the “interstitial space” between the two walls of the tank.
